Introduction of Professor Sir Robert Tony Watson, CMG, FRS
Professor Sir Robert Watson is chair of the Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.
Previously he chaired the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) where he contributed to the IPCC receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. Other assessments he has led included the Intergovernmental Assessment of Agricultural Scientific and Technology for Development, and the Global Biodiversity Assessment.
He has served as a Scientific Advisor in the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy at the White House under President Clinton. He served as the Chief Scientist of the World Bank.
He has received several significant honours and fellowships for his contributions to environment, biodiversity and climate change. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of the United Kingdom. He was recognized as Champion of the World for Science and Innovation by the UN, and received the American Association for the Advancement of Science Award for International Scientific Cooperation
He holds several part-time positions as Professor of Environmental Sciences and Strategic Director for the Tyndall Centre at the University of East Anglia, UK, and the Sir Louis Matheson Fellow, Monash Sustainability Institute, Monash University, Australia.
Professor Sir Robert Watson has a PhD from Queen Mary College, London University.
